Dhaka: An arrest warrant has been issued against the first Hindu Chief Justice of Bangladesh Surendra Kumar Sinha by a court there. Judge Surendra Sinha has accused of embezzlement of Rs 3.4 crore (four crore taka) and money laundering. Judge Sinha, who lives in the US, was declared a fugitive by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). In this case, the court has ordered the arrest of 10 more people besides Judge Sinha.
Surendra Kumar Sinha became the first Hindu Chief Justice of Bangladesh in 2015. Surendra Sinha became the 21st Chief Justice of Bangladesh since the creation of Bangladesh. The bench headed by Surendra Kumar had sentenced 12 people to death in the murder of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. In 2016, after the Chief Justice, a five-judge bench headed by Surendra Sinha upheld the death sentence of a top Islamic leader for war crimes during the 1971 freedom struggle.
It was during the tenure of Surendra Sinha that the Supreme Judiciary of Bangladesh announced the 16th amendment to the Constitution on July 2017. After this amendment, Parliament got the right to impeach the justice of the apex court. Angered by this, Sheikh Hasina government accused Judge Sinha of misusing the position and corruption.
