On October 1, 1894, Birsa gathered all the Mundas as a young leader and started a movement for forgiveness from the British. In 1895, he was arrested and sentenced to two years in jail in Hazaribagh Central Jail. But Birsa and his disciples were determined to help the famine-stricken people of the region and achieved the status of a great man in his lifetime. He was called and worshiped by the people of that area as "Dharti Baba". After the increase of their influence, the consciousness of organizing arose among the Mundas of the entire region.
Birsa ji was arrested in 1900 for inciting tribal people and was sentenced to 2 years and finally died on 9 June 1900 due to a slow poison given to him by the British.
