Very few people would know that Gulzar's real name is Sampoorna Singh Kalra. Gulzar was born on August 18, 1934, in Jhelum, Punjab, now in Pakistan. Gulzar's family had moved to Amritsar after partition, but Gulzar did not feel like it in Amritsar and came to Mumbai. After coming to Mumbai, Gulzar started working in the garage to earn a living, writing poems when he got time in the garage. Gulzar's career started in 1961 as an assistant to Vimal Rai, who has also worked with celebrities like Rishikesh Mukherjee and Hemant Kumar. During this time, he got a chance to write a song in the film Bandini, he wrote 'Mora Gora Ang Laile' in the film Bandini. Meanwhile, Gulzar fell in love with the famous actress Rakhi. However, Rakhi was already married.
Rakhi was married to a Bengali filmmaker at the age of 15. But the marriage did not last long and the relationship broke up. Gulzar and Rakhi first met at a Bollywood party and he gave her heart. The two finally got married on May 15, 1973. The shooting of the film 'Aandhi' was going on in Kashmir. The film's actress Suchitra Sen was furious with actor Sanjeev Kumar. That's why Gulzar came to celebrate Suchitra, there was an hour-long conversation between the two in the locked room, and Rakhi saw Gulzar leaving his room and the two fought fiercely. Gulzar is said to have picked up Rakhi on his hand and the two changed their ways. Although the two are seen together in public forums, Gulzar has been living alone for the past 44 years.
