New Delhi: August 20, the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, is celebrated as 'Sadbhavana Diwas' or Sadbhav Diwas. This day i.e. Sadbhavana Diwas is celebrated with the aim of promoting peace, national unity and communal harmony among all Indians.  Actually, every year on August 20, this day is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of India's youngest PM late Rajiv Gandhi.

Let me tell you that after the sudden assassination of Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi was made PM in a hurry. And he became the youngest Prime Minister of the country by becoming the Prime Minister at the age of 40. Tributes are paid to Rajiv every year on Sadbhavana Diwas. Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had come to campaign for elections in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu in May 1991, where he was assassinated. Sonia Gandhi, who accompanied Rajiv in most election rallies, was not with him in this rally. The Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavana Award was instituted in 1992, a year after Rajiv's death.

By becoming the youngest PM of India, Rajiv made his special contribution in advancing the field of education. In 1986, Rajiv Gandhi announced a National Policy on Education to modernize and expand higher education in India. Not only this, but he started a central government-based institution called Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya System in 1986 for the upliftment of the rural section of the society, under which free residential education is provided from class 6 to 12.
