NEW DELHI: A proposal to rename Itanagar's Hollongi Airport as the Donyi Polo Airport has been approved by the Union Cabinet.

The Arunachal Pradesh government issued a decision to rename the airport to reflect the devotion of the locals for the sun ('Donyi') and moon ('Polo'), which stands for the State's customs and rich cultural history.

In January 2019, the Center gave "in-principle" approval for the construction of Hollongi Greenfield Airport.

At a cost of Rs 646 crore, the project is being constructed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) with assistance from the government of the Center and the state of Arunachal Pradesh. 200 passengers can be accommodated in the airport's 4,100 sq. m. terminal building during peak hours.

The structure will contain eight check-in counters and all current passenger amenities.

The great hornbill is listed as "near threatened" and "vulnerable" on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List as a result of habitat destruction and poaching since 2018. According to estimations, there are between 13,000 and 27,000 great hornbills in the world.
