New Delhi: In the capital of the country, the bill giving more powers to the Lieutenant Governor was also passed by the Rajya Sabha yesterday. Now the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of Delhi has decided to challenge the Delhi National Capital Region Government (Amendment) Bill i.e. the GNCT Bill in the Supreme Court. Delhi government will soon file a petition against the bill in the Apex Court.

The GNCT bill was approved amid massive opposition from the opposition, defining certain roles and rights of the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. The Congress-led opposition parties opposed the bill and termed it against the Constitution and demanded that it be referred to the Select Committee for detailed discussion. But the Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kishan Reddy, while replying to the discussion on the bill, said that according to the constitution, Delhi, with limited rights, is a Union Territory with Legislative Assembly. The Supreme Court has also said in its decision that it is a Union Territory and all amendments to the Bill are in line with the court's decision.

After the bill was passed in Rajya Sabha, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal said that it is a 'sad day' for democracy. He further said that he will continue to struggle to reassign power to the people. The Parliament passed the Delhi National Capital Territory Government (Amendment) Bill, (GNCTD) 2021, which has given more powers to the Lieutenant Governor.
