New Delhi: Arvind Kejriwal Announces Resignation, Calls for Early Delhi Elections

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convener Arvind Kejriwal has announced his decision to resign as the Chief Minister of Delhi within the next two days, sparking discussions about his successor. Kejriwal's move is seen as a strategic step to vacate the Chief Minister's post and expedite preparations for the upcoming assembly elections. He has urged for the Delhi Assembly elections, originally scheduled for February next year, to be held in November this year.

Kejriwal emphasized that he will only return as Chief Minister if the public vouches for his honesty, stating that both he and Manish Sisodia, who would serve as Deputy Chief Minister, will assume office only with the people’s trust.

Reports suggest that Kejriwal aims to synchronize the Delhi assembly elections with those in Maharashtra, scheduled for November. By stepping down, he plans to focus directly on campaigning. While Manish Sisodia will not take over as Chief Minister, he is expected to play a key role in the campaign alongside Kejriwal. Both leaders were recently arrested in connection with a liquor case.

To determine his successor, Kejriwal has convened a meeting with all 60 AAP MLAs. Five prominent AAP leaders are being considered for the Chief Minister's post, with Minister Atishi Marlena, who manages five portfolios in the Delhi government, emerging as a frontrunner. Other potential candidates include Kailash Gehlot, Saurabh Bharadwaj, Gopal Rai, and Imran Hussain, each handling multiple departments.
