During their Asia Cup 2022 opening match in Dubai on Sunday, August 28, India and Pakistan received a 40% match fee fine for their sluggish turnover rate. Due to new International Cricket Council regulations, the two sides were penalised during the actual game because they were required to have five fielders inside the 30-yard circle during the final two overs of each team's innings.

In a thrilling last over, India overcame Pakistan by five wickets despite both teams giving it their all. However, there was so much anxiety in Dubai that things did not move very quickly.

After accounting for time allowances, Jeff Crowe of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees determined that Babar Azam's and Rohit Sharma's teams fell two overs short of their respective targets.

According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with minimum over-rate offences, players are penalised 20% of their match earnings for each over that their side fails to bowl in the allocated time.

There was no need for a formal hearing because both captains entered pleas of guilty to the offence and agreed to the suggested punishment. The accusations were made by the on-field umpires Masudur Rahman and Ruchira Pilliyaguruge, third umpire Raveendra Wimalasiri, and fourth umpire Gazi Sohel. On Wednesday, August 31, India will play Hong Kong in their last Group A encounter, while Pakistan will play the associate team the next day.
