The capacity expansion of the Digboi refinery in Assam has started. Hardeep Singh Puri, the union petroleum minister, informed him of this. otably, Asia's earliest and oldest oil refinery, the Digboi refinery, was commissioned on December 11, 1901.
Puri stated that the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) has taken steps to increase the capacity of the Digboi refinery from 0.65 million metric tonnes per annum to 1 million metric tonnes per annum. Hardeep Singh Puri, the union petroleum minister, told Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of this in a letter. "IOCL has also taken up the subject with Oil India Limited (OIL) to increase the current Duliajan-Digboi crude pipeline capacity from 0.65 MMTPA to one MMTPA to satisfy the crude need for the additional capacity of Digboi refinery," he added.
Puri also mentioned that work on expanding the capacity of the Guwahati refinery is currently underway. "Furthermore, the capacity expansion of IOCL's Guwahati Refinery from one MMTPA to 1.2 MMTPA is now underway and is slated to be completed by October 2023," the union minister said.
Meanwhile, Assam's chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has responded positively with the Digboi refinery's capacity expansion. "I am overjoyed to get the letter from the Union minister about action on the Digboi Refinery's capacity increase," Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated.
On September 23, this year, CM Sarma wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to consider expanding the capacity of the Digboi refinery.
