Assam Cabinet's major decision on women's reservation to be amended

Guwahati: The Assam Cabinet on Friday decided to change laws to increase women's representation by providing reservation for them in municipal bodies for 10 years. So that women can participate more effectively in the decision-making process. The Assam Cabinet has decided to amend the Assam Nagar Act, 1956 to provide women's reservation. It has been decided to extend the tenure of women reservation to 10 years in direct elections to the posts of corporators of the corporation.

Other important decisions taken in the Cabinet meeting chaired by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma include setting up of Assam Agricultural Forestry Development Board, which is to encourage farmers and growers to plant trees in their land. Here includes sharing 8.02 acres of land to Heraka Service. It also includes approval of the Trust for construction of Cultural Centre and Assam Procurement Preference Policy, 2021.

The Assam Agricultural Forestry Development Board is said to act as a platform to set up farmers, industry and other stakeholders. The Assam Cabinet in collaboration with IIT Guwahati has also decided to set up a super-speciality hospital at the IIT Guwahati complex in north Guwahati.
