Guwahati: Recently 4004 cases have been registered regarding child marriage in Assam. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday (February 2) said that his government is determined to end child marriage in the state. Not only this, he said that action will be started in these matters from February 3 i.e. from today.
Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted that Assam Police has registered 4004 cases of child marriage in the state. Police action will start on 3rd February. I request everyone's cooperation. In fact, last month itself the Assam cabinet announced to initiate action against child marriage and appealed to all the stakeholders to cooperate in these matters. Not only this, but the government has also approved a proposal to take action under the POCSO Act against men who marry girls below the age of 14 years.
Assam Chief Minister Sarma further said that thousands of such people (husbands) would be arrested in the next 5-6 months. Because it is a crime to have sex with a girl below the age of 14, even if he is a legal husband. CM Sarma said that the legal age of marriage for a woman is 18 years and action will be taken against those who marry underage girls. He said that many could be given life imprisonment.
Why is the Assam government suddenly strict on child marriage?
Let us tell you that, recently the report of the National Family Health Survey came out, in which it was said that the maternal and child mortality rate is very high in Assam. One of the main reasons for this is child marriage. After this, the Himanta Sarma government of the state had ordered to take action against the child marriages. Not only this, the police were also asked to run a campaign against the practice of child marriage. Police has so far registered 4004 cases in this matter. Of these, 370 cases have been registered in Dharbi, 255 in Hojai, 235 in Udalguri, 224 in Morigaon and rest in other districts.
