GUWAHATI: Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced on Monday that a new Assembly building will be completed in August this year, providing a modern facility for the state. The capital of Assam was shifted from Shillong to Dispur in September 1972, and a temporary house was acquired for the Assam Legislative Assembly, which had previously operated from a tea warehouse. The existing Dispur building commenced its first session on March 16, 1973.
Due to various delays and revisions, the estimated cost of the new assembly building in Assam escalated from Rs 234 crore to Rs 351 crore. The complex will encompass the main assembly building, annexe I building, and annexe II building, spanning across a 10-acre property, as informed by a senior government official.
In order to assess the progress of the under-construction Assam Legislative Assembly premises, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and assembly speaker Biswajit Daimari conducted an inspection on Sunday. They visited the Vidhan Sabha Hall, Speaker's Chamber, and other areas, and instructed officials to ensure completion of all tasks with high quality and within the designated timeframe.
The main assembly building, covering an area of 18,459 square meters, features a pitched roof with a glass top to allow natural light to illuminate the interiors. The first level of the legislative building will provide ample space for approximately 180 legislators. Additionally, the new Assam Legislative Assembly is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, including seven elevators, including a glass lift and an escalator, and central air conditioning.
It's worth noting that the Assam Legislative Assembly comprises 126 members who are directly elected through elections, and no nominated members are allowed. The new building has been designed to accommodate potential increases in the number of MLAs in the future, ensuring adequate seating arrangements.
As the completion of this significant project draws near, Assam eagerly anticipates the inauguration of its new Assembly building, which will serve as a symbol of progress and modernity for the state.
