In Assam, polling was held on 27th March for 47 seats in the first phase of assembly elections. In Assam, assembly elections for the 47 seats were started on Saturday in the first phase in which voting is being held strictly following the rules on coronavirus. Rahul Gandhi, JP Nadda, Smriti Irani are visiting the state today.

264 candidates including 23 women in the fray: The political fate of CM Sarbananda Sonowal, ministers, and opposition leaders will be decided in this phase. A total of 264 candidates including 23 women are in the fray in the first phase, officials said. In the first phase, a total of 300 companies of security forces have been deployed, wherein people are voting at 11,537 polling stations in 12 districts of Upper Assam and north coastal districts of Brahmaputra.

The first phase of polling: According to media reports, officials said, polling in all sensitive areas has been intensified and strict vigil is being maintained. Most of these 47 seats have triangular competition between the ruling BJP, the Congress-led opposition Grand Alliance and the newly formed Assam Ethnic Council (AJP). A total of 81,09,815 voters will be able to exercise their franchise in the first phase. There are 40,77,210 men and 40,32,481 women, while 124 are third gender voters, besides 9 foreign voters. Polling is going to continue till 6 pm.
