Floods and landslides continue to wreak havoc in Assam, 61 dead

Guwahati: Two more people lost their lives in the floods on Saturday. So far, 10.75 lakh people have been affected in 18 districts due to floods. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority has given information in its regular bulletin that one person died in the floods in Morigaon and another person died in Tinsukia district. After two more deaths, the total death toll in the state has risen to 61.

Of these, 37 people died due to floods and 24 people died due to landslides caused by continuous rains. In Lakhimpur and Bongaigaon, the flood level decreased slightly on Saturday. The districts of Dhemaji, Biswanath, Chirang, Darang, Nalbari, Barpeta, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup, Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup Metropolitan, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia are badly affected by the floods.

The floods have also caused havoc in Barpeta, where more than 6.33 lakh people have been affected and after this about 1.95 lakh people have been affected in South Salmara. More than 83,300 people are affected in Goalpara. It said that in the last 24 hours, SDRF, district administration and local people have transported 1,046 people to safe places in three districts. The district administration has set up 171 relief camps and distribution centers in eight districts, where 6,531 people have taken shelter at this time.
