GUWAHATI: Asam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora on Thursday said the state government has decided to move the Supreme Court for re-verification of the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Bora said, "The decision was taken during a meeting with the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) and other indigenous organisations. We will not accept the NRC list, which was published in August 2019. We have now decided to move the apex court seeking re-verification," he said, adding that a meeting was held between the Assam government and the AASU leadership regarding the implementation of the Assam Accord.
On the other hand, AASU advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya said that the names of many illegal Bangladeshis were included in the final list of NRC and we want an illegal Bangladeshi free NRC. "That's why we want the NRC list to be re-verified. We have already filed a petition in the Supreme Court. We request both the Centre and the state government that they should also approach the apex court for a correct NRC." Earlier in 2020, Hitesh Dev Sarma, state coordinator of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) of Assam, had submitted an affidavit before the Gauhati High Court, saying that the NRC list which was dated August 31, Published in 2019, it was a supplementary list of the NRC and the names of 4795 ineligible persons were included in the list. More recently, on March 4, the Gauhati High Court allowed a writ petition seeking a direction to the Centre and the state government to release the biometric information collected during the process of drafting the NRC.
The Supreme Court had in November 2018 directed that it is mandatory for those excluded from the draft NRC list published on July 31, 2018, to submit their biometrics during the claim hearing. A total of 27.43 lakh people had registered for their biometrics, but 19 lakh people could not find their names in the final list.
