Guwahati: On Monday, the last day of his first assembly session after becoming assam CM, Himanta Biswa Sarma said the government will take all possible steps within the purview of the Constitution to protect cows in the state. Governor Jagdish Mukhi, during his welcome address on the first day of the Assembly last Friday, had said that the Assam government plans to introduce the Cow Protection Bill in the next session of the Assembly.
CM Sarma said, "Cow is our mother. We will not allow cows to be smuggled from West Bengal. Beef should not be consumed in places where cows are worshipped". He also clarified that this does not mean that everyone has to change their habits immediately. CM Sarma said madina hotels (where beef is found) are not required in areas like Fancy Bazaar, Shantipur or Gandhibasti (all in Guwahati). Because the people here are sensitive to it. There is no need for change in areas where there is no such sensitivity.
Hemant Viswa Sarma further said that our Constitution is also against cow slaughter. According to the directive principles of state policy framed under the Constitution, cow slaughter should be prevented. Illegal trade of cows in the state will also be stopped. the Assam Cattle Preservation Act in the state has been in force since 1950. Under Section 5 of the same Act, only those animals can be killed for which a certificate of "fit-for-slaughter" is issued by the veterinarians after meeting all the criteria. CM Sarma has received a lot of support from BJP MLAs in the matter.
