Guwahati: More than 100 fish were found dead in Diglipukhuri river in Guwahati in Assam amidst corona crisis and are likely to have died due to low oxygen level in the pond. This was reported by an official of the fisheries department. A fisheries department spokesperson said on Sunday that the dead fish were seen flowing into the river on Saturday and the process of evacuating them has been initiated. He said preliminary investigations have ruled out the possibility of poisoning and environmental conditions could be the reason.

He said, "Low oxygen levels in water due to high organic content seem to be the reason behind the death of such a large number of fish, but we will be able to speak firmly only after completing the investigation". Diglipukhuri Pond is about 500 metres long and is located in Ambari area of the largest city in the state. The pond was built as a canal of the Brahmaputra river by the rulers of the Ahom dynasty. Later, due to British rule, the canal was filled. Diglipukhuri is a famous tourist spot in the city.

There is a big fish market in Assam. Thousands of poor people make up for their food by sweating. Instead of buying, they fish from their own pond. Assam has a population of more than 50 percent of the population using fish as food. At the time of Corona, when the Central Government announced an economic package of Rs. 20 thousand crores.
