Guwahati: In a significant operation, Assam police have successfully intercepted a group of 20 youths in the Kokrajhar-Chirang forests who were attempting to establish a new militant group. The police also recovered a substantial arsenal of weapons and ammunition during the operation.

According to Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh, the seized cache includes six automatic rifles, four single-shot rifles, three pistols with magazines, five No. 36 HE grenades, 54 rounds of AK rifle ammunition, and nine rounds of pistol ammunition. This large recovery underscores the seriousness of the threat posed by the group. GP Singh detailed the operation on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "In Kokrajhar-Chirang forests, we have been able to intercept and bring out a group of 20 youths who had been trying to form a new militant group for the last three to four months. They have listened to reason and come out and handed over the weapons held by them."

The DGP emphasized the commitment of the Assam police to maintaining peace and security in the state, asserting, "We strive to keep our state free of weapons and violence." The intercepted group had reportedly been active in efforts to organize and arm themselves over recent months. The successful interception and weapon recovery reflect a significant step in curbing potential violence and destabilization in the region. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the matter to uncover further details and understand the broader implications of this militant group’s activities. The operation is expected to provide critical insights into the dynamics of militant recruitment and arms distribution in Assam.
