Assam Produced Whooping 34 Lakh Kgs of Cattle Meat in 2019-20

Guwahati: According to recent report from Assam Animal Husbandry which was published by its Minister Atul Bora in a written reply to a query by AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam on Wednesday in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Assam has produced a whooping 5,29,63,511 kg of meat in the financial year of 2019-20. The report further reader reads that, out of the total meat production, "cattle meat" was 33,68,021 kg and buffalo meat was 1,59,319 kg. The remaining meats consisted those of goat (1,59,53,865), sheep (18,83,960), pig (2,02,46,220) and poultry (1,13,52,125)."

Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Atul Bora further furnishing the details stated that according to the 20th Livestock Census of 2019, Assam has a "cattle population" of 1,09,09,239 and buffalo population of 4,21,715. "The state also produced nearly 98 crore litres of milk, including 1.83 crore litres of goat milk, in 2019-20," the report further added. Earlier in July, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had tabled "The Assam Cattle Preservation Bill-2021" in the state assembly to regulate the slaughter, consumption and transportation of cattle. He also added that the proposed legislation would further prevent smuggling and illegal trade of cattle.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, who additionally is in charge of the Home and Political Affairs Departments said, "In the light of the experience over the years and in view of the shortcomings which have been observed, it is considered that there is an imperative need to enact legislation to include sufficient legal provisions to regulate the slaughter, consumption and transportation of cattle by repealing "The Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 1950".
