It was decided to remove the word 'Maktab' from 63 government and government-aided madrasas in Assam. This important decision has been taken by the Government of Assam. State Education Minister Hemant Vishwa Sarma gave this information on Saturday. Maktab is an Arabic word, which means school. That is, there are studies up to the fifth grade in Maktab. The state government has decided to convert all government madrasas and ashrams that teach culture into higher secondary schools.

Regarding this matter, Sarma said that apart from Maktab, no change will be made in the name of the school. Only the word Maktab will be removed from the name of the school. Because of Maktab, students have trouble getting admission in other schools after the fifth grade. The talent of children studying in Maktab is questioned. At the same, he said that Maktab is mainly known as a traditional Islamic primary school. Sarma said that this word has now become irrelevant because the Maktab education system no longer exists in Assam.

In his statement, the Finance Minister of the state further said that, 'Students of such schools are questioned about their abilities to study in high schools where there is no religious study.' Sarma said that the government's decision to convert madrasas and Sanskrit schools into higher secondary schools had already been informed and its process, which began after the state budget was presented, is expected to be completed by August.
