Dibrugarh: Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Rameshwar Teli on Friday inaugurated Assam's first solid waste management project in Thakurthan area of ​​Lekai. In his inaugural address, the Union Minister said, "It is a historic day for the people of Dibrugarh as the district has inaugurated the first solid waste management project in Assam. For a long time, residents have been facing a lot. problems due to non-availability of proper garbage disposal unit."

He said, “Earlier garbage and waste materials were dumped in the Maizan area near the Brahmaputra river in Dibrugarh, causing pollution in the entire area. So, because of this, the MLAs of Dibrugarh and Lahowal came up with the project and it was done successfully. Inaugurated today." According to sources, the estimated budget for the construction of the project is Rs. 75.03 crore on 28.3 hectare land. The project was created under the Assam Urban Infrastructure Investment Program (AUIIP).

The solid waste management project is capable of converting 100 metric tons per day (TPD) of waste into compost. The project was started in 2017 under AUIIP in Lekai. Dibrugarh town was till now unscientific dumping of garbage at Maizon Ghat on the banks of Brahmaputra river. The 22 municipalities of Dibrugarh city generate about 80 metric tonnes of solid waste every day.
