Puducherry legislative assembly on Monday unanimously adopted a resolution urging the Centre not to permit Karnataka to construct a dam across river Cauvery at Mekedatu.  The resolution, tabled by Chief Minister of the Union Territory N Rangasamy, said the thirteenth meeting of the Cauvery Water Management to be held on Tuesday should not take up for discussion the issue among the riparian States. The resolution said if and when the dam is built, there would not be any water available for farming in Karaikal which is in the region of Puducherry.  The government of neighbouring Tamil Nadu has already approached the Supreme Court to restrain Karnataka from building the dam.

Moving the resolution, Chief Minister N Rangaswamy said that if a dam was built across river Cauvery at Mekedatu, Puducherry will not get its due share of 7 TMC of Cauvery water.
He said he had written to PM Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on July 14 on this matter.

DMK member A M H Nazim then said that Puducherry should also join Tamil Nadu in the case pending in the Supreme Court on Mekedatu issue. The  BJP nominated member Ashok Babu suggested that Puducherry should file a separate case in the Supreme Court on the issue. Later, the resolution was adopted without a debate.
