Another petition filed in the Supreme Court against CAA, also challenged the old citizenship law

New Delhi: Another petition has been filed in the Supreme Court against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). This petition has been filed by an association named Association for Protection of Civil Rights (ACPR). In this petition, apart from the Citizenship Amendment Act, Section 3 (1) of the Citizenship Act 1955 has also been challenged. According to this section, there are different rules for people born in India at different times.

Protests are taking place on the streets against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), legal battles are also being fought. In this connection, on Friday, an association named Association for Protection of Civil Rights has filed another petition in the apex court. In this petition, the petitioner has declared the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019, Section 3 (1) of the Citizenship Act 1955 and the third schedule of the Citizenship Act 1955 as unconstitutional.

The petition states that Section 3 (1) of the Citizenship Act 1955 sets different conditions for granting citizenship to children born at different times in India. Special emphasis has been laid on the rights of children in the petition. It says that its provisions are such that some children do not get citizenship from anywhere and doing so is a violation of the values and principles of the United Nations.
