Aston Villa stunned Manchester United 3-1 at Villa Park thanks to an outstanding performance, giving coach Unai Emery victory in his debut game in charge of the team. On the strength of a strong start, the head coach orchestrated the team's first victory at home in a Premier League match against the Red Devils since 1995.

In the seventh minute, Leon Bailey scored the game's first goal, and minutes later, Lucas Digne doubled the advantage with a beautiful free-kick.

The hosts were unaffected by Luke Shaw's deflected shot just before halftime; they secured all three points when Jacob Ramsey buried a feed from the crucial Ollie Watkins minutes after the break.

Despite United dominating possession (61% to 38% for Villa), the home team had six total shots, four of which were on goal. Only three of the eight shots United took were on goal.

On Sunday, Crystal Palace defeated West Ham United 2-1 while Newcastle United defeated Southampton 4-1. Against Chelsea, Arsenal triumphed 1-0.

Emery decided to make two changes to the starting XI from the team's last game against Newcastle United, inserting Digne and Ramsey. He was greeted enthusiastically when he emerged from the tunnel.

And his adjustments almost immediately yielded results, as Ramsey played a significant role in the game's opening goal after seven minutes. After excellent work by Watkins, the hometown hero picked up the ball, threading a pass to Bailey, who then unleashed a low left-foot shot across David de Gea and into the far corner.

Emery's choice to re-incorporate Digne into the team paid off well too less than four minutes later. The Frenchman stepped up and curled a free-kick over the wall and away from de Gea's dejected dive after Ramsey had been scythed down by Shaw.

Lejandro Garnacho's shot and Cristiano Ronaldo's header forced two excellent stops from the Argentine goalkeeper Emi Martnez as United started to settle in the final third.

Martnez was defeated just as the tannoy signalled the start of first-half stoppage time when Shaw's half-volley took a wicked deflection from Ramsey and soared into the open half of Villa's goal.

Just eight seconds after the break, Bailey sent a strong shot at de Gea as the home team redoubled their offensive efforts.
