Noted Brazilian singer Marilia Mendonca died in a plane crash at the age of 26. According to a report received, her uncle, producer and two crew members also died in an accident in a rural area of south-eastern Minas Gerais. An inquiry has been initiated to ascertain the cause of the accident. A Latin Grammy winner in 2019, Mendonca became renowned for focusing on women's experiences with failed relationships.
Mendonca, one of Brazil's biggest names in indigenous music, started her career as a teenager and became a national star in 2016. She was known as the 'Queen of Suffering' of the country. Last year, as concerts were cancelled due to corona infection, she performed in a series of online gigs. One of them holds the record for the most-watched live stream in the world, with a peak audience of 3.3 million on YouTube.
Mendonca also has a two-year-old son. She was set to perform at a music festival in Caronata town, 12 kilometres from the accident site, on Friday evening. Hours before the accident, she shared a video on social media in which she was preparing to board a private plane.
