Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said in his statement that there was a growing tension in the Indo-Pacific region over geographical claims and a recent example of this was the skirmish between the Indo-Chinese forces in Ladakh. Giving information about Australia's 2020 Defense Strategic Update, Australian PM Morrison said that there has been increasing tension over territorial claims in the Indo-Pacific region, which we recently saw on the disputed border between India and China South China Sea and East China.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said that visiting Australia would increase defence spending by 40% over the next 10 years to purchase long-range military equipment that would focus on the Indo-Pacific region. In his threatening speech on escalating tensions with China, Morrison said that Australia would spend $ 270 billion ($ 186.5 billion) over the next 10 years to acquire long-range capabilities on air, sea and land. In 2016, Australia also promised to spend $ 195 billion over the next 10 years. Morrison further stated that Australia would also have to focus on the Indo-Pacific region.

Morrison further said in a speech in Canberra that we want to free the Indo-Pacific region from coercion and hegemony. We want an area where all countries, big and small, can freely connect with each other and guide them according to international rules and norms. Although Morrison did not name China in his speech, Australia's intentions towards the Indo-Pacific region are seen as a sign that Australia is less dependent on the US and more assertive in its dealings with Beijing.
