Veinna: Austria declared on Friday that a comprehensive nationwide Covid-19 lockdown will begin next week, just a week after imposing a lockdown on the unvaccinated. In the face of the Covid-19 comeback, Austria became the first country in the European Union to take such a step. It has also made vaccination mandatory as of February 1, according to Euronews.

The new regulations, which Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg announced on Friday morning, will be in place for ten days beginning Monday. The majority of businesses will close, while cultural events will be postponed.

At a press conference, Schallenberg was cited as saying, "We have to confront reality." "A fifth wave is not something we desire. We don't want a sixth or seventh wave, either "According to public broadcaster ORF, the Chancellor said. The effects will be evaluated after 10 days, and if Covid cases do not decrease substantially, the lockdown will be extended to a maximum of 20 days.

Schools will remain open for those who need to go, according to Austria's Health Minister, but all parents have been encouraged to keep their children at home if at all feasible. Covid infections have been on the rise in Austria in recent weeks, prompting the lockdown. In November, the number of daily cases tripled, reaching over 15,000 on Thursday.
