New Delhi: An 11-member committee recommended that the auto-rickshaw fares in Delhi will rise to Rs 9.15 per kilometre as opposed to the current rate, which is Rs 8 per km. A new report submitted by a committee stated that the auto-rickshaw fare in the national capital is expected to rise by around 14.3 per cent.
However, the committee which submitted the report about the rates was formed in November. Though there is a change in the fare per kilometre, the flat rate of Rs 25 which is charged for the first two kilometres will remain constant. The source reported that the data submitted by the committee will be reviewed by the transport minister, Kailash Gahlot. The national capital has around 98,000 registered auto-rickshaws in the city. The Aam Aadmi Party had tried to change the auto fares in 2016. However, they could not implement the change after they received resistance from auto-rickshaw unions.

Like 2016, this year too, the unions alleged that the suggestions made by the committee were not aligned with the promises made by the government. The president of a union told HT that the Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal had met with two of their representatives in July 2018. He added that the CM had approved their demand of charging Rs 25 for the first kilometre and charging Rs 10 per kilometre after that. While the fares of the auto-rickshaws have been revised, the fares of the gramin sewas, RTVs, eco-friendly cabs have not been revised.
