Today is the first death anniversary of legendary hockey player Balbir Singh Sr. Three-time Olympic gold medallist legendary hockey player Balbir Singh Sr passed away on this day on May 25, 2020. Balbir Senior, one of the greatest athletes in the country, was among the 16 greatest Olympians in modern Olympic history selected by the International Olympic Committee.
He still holds the record for five goals against the Netherlands in the Helsinki Olympics (1952) final. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1957. Balbir Sr. won gold medals at the London (1948), Helsinki (1952) and Melbourne (1956) Olympics. He was also the manager of the Indian team that won the World Cup in 1975.
The Punjab government is going to pay special tribute to veteran hockey player Balbir Singh Sr. who won India a gold medal at the Olympics. The state government decided that the Mohali International Hockey Stadium will be named after Padma Shri Balbir Singh Sr. at a tribute meeting on Tuesday. The former Olympian was admitted to the hospital on May 8 last year after complaining of pneumonia and high fever. He also suffered three heart attack during treatment. He had been in a coma since May 18 due to a blood clot in his brain. Balbir Singh Sr passed away on May 25 at the age of 96.
