BANGALORE: The under-construction portico of Saint Martha’s Hospital on Nrupathunga Road in Bengaluru collapsed Tuesday. Four persons were trapped under the debris. Karnataka Fire and Emergency Services force have rescued four labourers who were stuck under the collapsed portico of the hospital.

Fortunately, there was no movement of patients or people on the Saint Martha's hospital grounds at the time of the occurrence at 6.15 a.m.

Early Tuesday morning, the portico arch collapsed. The labourers namely Moyuddeen, Chand Pasha, Rafi Saab, and Basavaraj, were rescued following a three-hour mission by the personnel.

"We will verify the documents in connection with the incident and begin action," said DCP in-charge of Central Division Dr. S.D. Sharanappa. According to police sources, the portico collapsed because there were inadequate weight-bearing pillars installed.

To save the trapped workers, three fire tenders and an earthmover were deployed. The labourers were taken to the hospital by fire and emergency services personnel. One of the labourers is in critical condition, according to a police officer.
