Veteran filmmaker and theatre person TS Nagabharan is known for bringing lively personalities to life on screen or on stage - be it Allama Prabhu or Shishunala Sharifa. His latest drama, Vidya Sundari Bengaluru Nagaratnamma, is courtesy, about the life of the artist and activist Bangalore Nagaratnamma. He told how this drama came into existence. "I was amazed at the way Nagaratnamma took the music forward Nagabharan says, "I always wanted to do a musical on stage, especially one that would have Carnatic music. It has always been on my mind and I was searching for a relevant play. Meanwhile, I received an offer to do a biopic on Bangalore Nagaranathama, based on a book on him. Therefore, I started working on the script. However, while doing so, I realized that capturing her life in a film was very difficult.

When I decided to start by doing a play on it, ”he explains. He adds, "I was amazed at the way he moved the music." Research for the play took about a year. Only then did I successfully stage the play, in which I was confident of making a film based on his life. "She was the pioneer of Harikatha" Nagabharan also says that her research inspired her to see that her two aspects - a cultural symbol and an activist - were intrinsic to the narrative. He also states that her feminism and activism were far ahead of her time. "Before all the 'islands' came into existence, it laid its foundation for many things.
