Bangladesh: In a major diplomatic move, Bangladesh has dismissed two of its diplomats stationed in India. This action comes amid strained relations between the two countries following the recent fall of Sheikh Hasina's government in Bangladesh. The decision, implemented by the interim government led by Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus, took effect on August 17.

The diplomats in question are Shaban Mahmud, who was assigned to the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi, and Ranjan Sen, who was posted at the Bangladeshi consulate in Kolkata. Both were reportedly instructed to leave their positions before the end of their contracts.

This development follows India's decision to withdraw all non-essential staff and their families from the Bangladeshi high commission in Dhaka. This precautionary measure was taken due to ongoing violence in Bangladesh.

The diplomatic tensions are a result of recent political upheaval in Bangladesh. The fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government, which occurred due to a student-led uprising, has caused a significant rift between the two nations. Under Hasina's leadership since 2009, Bangladesh had been a key ally to India, assisting in counter-terrorism efforts and strengthening bilateral ties. However, Hasina was forced to resign and seek refuge in India on August 5.

Hasina now faces multiple legal challenges, including 42 murder charges in Bangladesh. The interim government in Dhaka has also revoked her diplomatic passport and visa privileges, increasing the risk of her potential extradition under the Bangladesh-India extradition treaty. According to a report, Hasina currently holds no passport other than the revoked diplomatic one.

Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, has suggested that the former Prime Minister may remain in India for an extended period. This comes as statements from British officials indicate that her asylum request in the UK may be denied.
