Flood Devastation Affects Over 3.6 Million People in Bangladesh, Two Dead

Dhaka, August 22 – Severe floods have ravaged 10 districts in Bangladesh, leaving two people dead and impacting the lives of over 3.6 million residents. The floods, caused by continuous rainfall and an influx of upstream water, have disrupted life across several regions since August 20.

According to the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry, one person lost their life in Feni and another in Brahmanbaria district. The disaster has affected 495 unions across 65 upazilas, leaving 586,040 families stranded and a total of 3,645,552 people suffering from the effects of the flood.

The hardest-hit districts include Feni, Cumilla, Khagrachhari, Noakhali, Chattogram, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Sylhet, and Lakshmipur. To provide relief, 82,694 people and 7,755 cattle have been sheltered in 2,246 relief centers, and medical support is being provided through 506 emergency medical teams, with 492 already deployed.

Relief efforts have included the allocation of ₹3.32 crore in cash, 19,650 metric tons of rice, and 15,000 packets of dry food to assist those affected. In addition, the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry has set up a control room to offer information and support. The control room can be reached at 0255101115.

Rescue operations are in full swing, with members of the Army and Navy actively involved in the affected areas of Feni. The Army has deployed 160 personnel along with 40 rescue vessels, while the Navy has mobilized 71 members and eight rescue vessels. A water treatment plant has also been established, and additional vessels, as well as Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel, are assisting in the rescue and relief efforts.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued an urgent warning of further heavy rainfall due to the ongoing monsoon. This is expected to affect the southern regions, including Dhaka and Mymensingh districts, within the next 48 hours. The department also warned that landslides could occur in the hilly areas of the Chattogram division due to the increased rainfall.

The authorities are coordinating relief efforts, ensuring that all resources, including medical teams, volunteers, and the Army, are effectively utilized to support the flood-affected population.
