NEW DELHI: Sheikh Hasina, the prime minister of Bangladesh, will visit India from September 5 to 8, with a focus of advancing the two countries' "multifaceted" relations.
During Hasina's visit, the two parties are anticipated to sign a deal on the temporary sharing of water from the Kushiyara river. The Prime Minister is also likely to ho to Ajmer in Rajasthan to visit the Dargah of revered Sufi saint Moinuddin Chishti.
External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said she will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and will meet President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar.
Hasina last went to New Delhi in October of this year.
Both parties have maintained a high degree of contact recently, including at the highest level, said Bagchi. He said, "The Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's upcoming visit will further enhance the complex relationships that bind the two nations based on deep historical and cultural ties, as well as mutual trust and understanding.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will call on Hasina. India and Bangladesh completed the text of their agreement last month about the temporary sharing of water from the Kushiyara river.
The 38th Ministerial-level meeting of the India-Bangladesh Joint Rivers Commission (JRC), held in Delhi on August 25, finalised the text of the memorandum of understanding (MoU).
The Joint Rivers Commission of India and Bangladesh was formulated in 1972 as a bilateral mechanism to redress issues of mutual interest on common rivers.
In recent years, there has been an improvement in India and Bangladesh's overall strategic partnership. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Bangladesh in March of last year to take part in celebrations honouring Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's 100th birthday and the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh's liberation from British rule.
