New Delhi: Bangladeshi diplomat Syed Muazzam Ali, a close friend and strong supporter of India, died suddenly on Monday after a brief illness. Former Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Muazzam Ali retired recently after his five-year term in India. He played an important role in strengthening India-Bangladesh relations during his tenure.

Sources in the Foreign Ministry have said that he left Delhi last week. He is survived by his wife Tuhafa Zaman Ali and two sons. In a tweet, Jaishankar has said, "He was a good friend and a strong partner for us." Ali joined the Pakistani Foreign Service in 1968. But after Bangladesh became a separate country in 1971, they expressed their allegiance to Bangladesh. He became a founding member of the Bangladesh Mission in Washington DC.

Ali also served as Bangladesh's permanent representative at UNESCO in Paris. The diplomat also served in the United Nations Permanent Mission to Warsaw, New Delhi (1986–88), New York, the Council General of Jeddah during the Gulf, Bhutan, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Turkmenistan, France, and Portugal. Many prominent leaders of Bangladesh have mourned his death.
