Nagaon: Assam Police detained  two persons and seized a large quantity of drugs from a vehicle in Nagaon district on Thursday evening.  The arrested persons have been identified as Moon Moon Hoque, a lawyer, and Iftikhar Hussain.

Police said that, on the basis of confidential information, a search operation was carried out in the Morikolong region of the district, and that a vehicle had 5,871 illegal tablets and 190 bottles of cough syrup.

"The operation was begun on Thursday evening and we discovered 5,871 banned tablets and 190 cough syrup bottles from a car in the Morikolong area," said Rupjyoti Kalita, Additional Superintendent of Police for the Nagaon district. Two individuals who were attempting to transfer the illegal substances have also been arrested.

A few days ago, the Assam police detained the driver of a truck that was headed to Tripura after seizing a sizable amount of illegal drugs from it in the Karimganj district.

Mukesh Yadav, the driver, was arrested on Monday along the border between Assam and Tripura. They recovered eight cartoons, totaling 1280 bottles of cough syrup, with an estimated market value of Rs. 6.50 lakh.

"Acting on a tip-off, the police of the Churaibari watch post near the Assam-Tripura border on Sunday apprehended a vehicle during inspection and recovered 1280 bottles of cough syrup from the truck." the officials said.

The truck was coming from Guwahati and was going towards Agartala, police said.
