Nairobi: Barbados' Prime Minister Mia Mottley was named one of the UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Champions of the Earth for 2021, the world body's highest environmental honour. The UNEP made the announcement on Tuesday in recognition of the champions' transformative influence on the environment and their leadership in advocating bold and decisive action on behalf of people and the world.

A scientist, indigenous woman, and entrepreneur have been shortlisted for the honour, in addition to the Prime Minister. The annual Champions of the Earth award has been given to some of the world's most outstanding environmental leaders since its debut in 2005.

So far, 101 laureates have received it, including 25 international leaders, 62 people, and 14 organisations. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) received a record number of nominations this year from all over the world.

"As we enter a critical decade for reducing emissions and protecting and restoring ecosystems, UNEP's Champions of the Earth show that we can all make a difference. Every little thing you do to help the environment counts. Humanity as a whole bears both a global responsibility and a tremendous potential "UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen stated.
