According to the latest report, Saif Ali Khan was introduced before John for the lead role in the film. But there was no consensus between Saif and director Nikhil Advani. Because of which John was taken into the film. It is learnt that Saif was offered the lead character in the film. He also listened to the script. But he never officially signed the film. Though the reasons for the same could not be disclosed. Nikhil has worked with John in the film Satyamev Jayate, and he felt that John could play the role better. So he was later contacted for the film.

In addition, the film 'Batla House' is inspired by the alleged police encounter operation in Delhi in the wake of the 2008 serial blast. John will be seen playing the role of DCP Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, who commands the operation. Mrinal Thakur and Ravi Kishan are also starring in the film along with John.
