New Delhi: The ever-increasing cases of corona in India have started affecting sports once again. The rapidly growing new variant of Corona, Omicron, has eclipsed cricket as well. In view of the new threat of Corona, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to postpone the Vijay Merchant Under-16 tournament. The tournament was to be played in Dehradun from January 9. All the teams were instructed to reach Dehradun before the start of the tournament.
According to media reports, BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Thursday sent an email to all the associations related to the board saying that domestic cricket started well and 748 matches have been completed so far. However, due to the sudden increase in new cases of coronavirus, junior tournaments have been forced to be postponed. He said that therefore taking a big decision, the board has announced the cancellation of the Vijay Merchant Trophy 2022.
Jay Shah further said that 'We are constantly monitoring the situation. If precautions are not taken, cases may increase in future. Therefore, after a thorough discussion with the experts and the medical team, the U-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy 2022 has been cancelled. The main reason for this is that the competitive players will not have been vaccinated and they are more likely to get infected. We cannot risk the health of our talented and young cricketers. That's why this decision is being taken.
