BCCI Steps In to Aid Former Cricketer Anshuman Gaikwad with ₹1 Crore for Cancer Treatment

New Delhi: Former Indian cricketer and ex-Team India coach Anshuman Gaikwad is currently battling blood cancer. In response to his condition, fellow cricketer Kapil Dev has stepped forward to offer support by deciding to donate his pension for Gaikwad's treatment. Other cricketers, including Mohinder Amarnath, Sandeep Patil, Madan Lal, and Kirti Azad, have also shown solidarity and support for their colleague.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has now joined the efforts to assist Gaikwad. The BCCI has committed to providing ₹1 crore for his medical treatment. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has instructed the immediate release of this amount and has personally spoken to Gaikwad's family to inquire about his health. Shah emphasized that the BCCI stands by Gaikwad's family during this challenging time and will continue to monitor his progress, hoping for his full recovery.

Anshuman Gaikwad, 71, began his Test career on December 27, 1974, against the West Indies in Kolkata and played his last Test match against England at the end of 1984. Throughout his 40-Test career, he accumulated 1,985 runs at an average of 30.07, including two centuries and ten half-centuries. His highest score was 201 runs against Pakistan. Gaikwad also participated in 15 ODIs, scoring 269 runs at an average of 20.69.

In first-class cricket, Gaikwad scored 12,136 runs in 206 matches at an average of 41.56, with 34 centuries and 47 half-centuries to his name. His highest first-class score was 225 runs. Additionally, he played 55 List-A matches, amassing 1,601 runs at an average of 32.67.

After retiring from playing cricket, Gaikwad transitioned into coaching and served as the head coach of the Indian cricket team from 1997 to 1999. He also worked with Gujarat State Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited (GSFC) before retiring from the company in 2000. In June 2018, the BCCI honored him with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Gaikwad’s father, Datta Gaikwad, was also a Test cricketer for India.
