Recently, the trial of the BCG vaccine in Tamil Nadu is going to start. If it becomes successful then surely the lives of the elderly will be saved from it. In fact, in the past, Chief Minister E Palaniswami had said that 'BCG vaccine will be monitored as a test on adults aged 60-95 years'. He had said, 'This is being done to reduce the death rate due to COVID among people of this age.'

With this, now Tamil Nadu Health Minister Dr. Vijayabaskar has given information. He said in the past, 'The state government will start testing to understand and test the effect of Basil Calumet-Guerin (BCG) vaccine in Tamil Nadu to reduce the mortality associated with Covid-19. He said that the National Institute for Research in Tuberculosis (NIRT) will soon start its pilot program in this direction. Along with this, in many countries, BCG is given to children for the prevention of tuberculosis,  a lot has been told in a recent press release issued by the Government of Tamil Nadu. According to him, the BCG vaccine is helpful in improving innate immunity.

It is also likely that 'it can help the elderly aged between 60 and 95 to recover from COVID-19'. The state government had recently sought the approval of the ICMR to study the effect of the BCG vaccine in the elderly. ICMR has approved and this testing is now going to start as a trial in NIRT soon.
