Benchmarks soar to new peaks; Sensex gains 228 pts, Nifty tops 15,750

Markets ended at a new closing high on both the benchmark indices on Monday, tracking gains in index heavyweights Reliance Industries, TCS and ICICI Bank. After starting on a tepid note, the 30-share BSE index rose 228.46 points finish at its all-time high of 52,328.51. Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty surged 81.40 points to a record 15,751.65.

Sectorally, the Nifty IT, Media, and Private Bank indices ended the session as top gainers, up near 1 percent each, while the Nifty Metal index was the top loser, down 0.5 percent.

PowerGrid was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, rallying over 4 percent, followed by NTPC, UltraTech Cement, Tech Mahindra, Reliance Industries and IndusInd Bank. On the other hand, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, HDFC and Dr Reddy were among the laggards.

Bajaj Finance ended lower by over 4 percent after a weak business update. The NBFC company estimated that it's Gross and net NPA can be higher in Q1 and Q2 of FY22.
Meanwhile, European markets at the time of writing this report were on the upside with FTSE up over 0.2 percent. Stock exchanges in Europe were largely trading with losses in mid-session deals.
