The Bengal government on Tuesday allowed the tea industry to conduct e-auctions amid the lockdown, but asked to strictly follow social distancing norms and other guidelines in the wake of the Covid-19 epidemic.

The Chief Secretary of the state Rajiv Sinha issued an order and allowed e-auction. The order states that the e-auction should be conducted after observing social distancing norms and other guidelines, which have been implemented in view of the spread of coronavirus. Calcutta Tea Traders Association (CTTA) Secretary J. Kalyanasundaram said that we welcome the decision.

In his statement, he further said that we had requested the government to allow the e-auction of tea to be held under lockdown. The last e-auction was held on 17 March. CTTA conducts e-auction in Kolkata. Kalyanasundaram said that the government's letter has been sent to the sales sub-committee for preparing future sales programs. The government had already given permission to start tea in gardens with a 25% workforce.
