Guwahati: The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, revealed on Tuesday that a group of approximately 133 individuals, fearing for their safety amidst the violent panchayat election in West Bengal, sought refuge in Assam's Dhubri District.

Taking to Twitter, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma stated, "Yesterday, 133 individuals, who were living in fear due to the violence that unfolded during the West Bengal panchayat election, found shelter in Dhubri District of Assam. We have provided them with a safe space in a relief camp, along with necessary provisions such as food and medical assistance."

Tragically, the West Bengal Panchayat Election resulted in the loss of 20 lives.

The election, marred by widespread violence, witnessed the destruction of ballot papers, looting of ballot boxes, and the unfortunate demise of political workers.

As of Sunday, 17 people had already lost their lives in election-related violence in Bengal.

On Monday, Maidul Sheikh, a TMC worker, succumbed to his injuries at NRS Medical College and Hospital. He had sustained severe injuries during a clash between TMC and Congress workers at Raghunathganj in Murshidabad district on Saturday.

Fresh polling took place on Monday across 19 districts of the state, covering nearly 700 polling booths.

State Election Commissioner Rajiva Sinha, upon his arrival at the SEC office, expressed, "As of now, the repolling process is being conducted peacefully."
