Bengaluru's largest crematorium opened for mass funeral amid rising cases of corona infection, in which 1,708 people were cremated in nearly 2 months, has now been closed on Thursday as corona cases across the country have come down in recent weeks, eliminating the need for such a temporary arrangement. According to a report, the four-acre temporary site was opened on April 25. The last rites of 84 persons were performed at a mass funeral here on May 7.
In the month of April-May, due to the second wave of the corona, cases of infection started increasing rapidly across the country, killing a large number of people daily in the country. Due to the increasing number of deaths in the country, waiting was being received at the crematorium. In view of this, the cemetery in Kurubarahalli village of Channanhalli Gram Panchayat was converted into a mass cremation portal where 16 corona victims were cremated on the first day, April 25.
An officer in charge of the same crematorium said Kurubarahalli crematorium was the largest of the three new sites opened due to the second wave where 41 pyres could be lit at a time. More than 30 contract employees of BBMP were deployed here. He said only a few bodies were brought to the crematorium as soon as the corona case incident started in Bengaluru in June. There was only one corpse on Wednesday. Keeping all this in mind, we decided to close this temporary portal.
