The state Tamil Nadu for the sixth consecutive year has been awarded by the Union Health Ministry  for the highest number of organ donations in any State across the country. Tamil Nadu also performed many transplantation on patients who had tested positive for COVID-19.  Health Minister C Vijuayabaskar and Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan on Friday received the award during the virtual conference held by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation of the Union Health Ministry. 

Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan appreciated Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami for promoting organ donation in the State during the award ceremony. Even during the pandemic situation, state has made a total of 27 cadaver donations were recorded with 97 organs being transplanted in the State. So far, state with 1,392 organ donors have donated 8,245 organs including major and minor organs. This year, donors from 75 districts across several States donated 255 organs in total throughout the country. 

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami took this opportunity to thank the frontline workers and other Health Department staff for being able to perform transplantations despite the virus threat. Patients who require organ transplantation can claim Rs 25 lakh under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme and this has helped increase the number of organ transplantation in the State. The State Health Department conducts an awareness campaign on organ donations in private colleges in Chennai. A marathon to promote organ donation was organised in Pudukottai involving 12,000 people participation.
