One of the separated conjoined twins Kalia passed away, and his death was confirmed by Emergency Officer of SCB Medical College & Hospital Dr Bhubanananda Maharana. “Kalia is no more. He died of septicemia and shock. His condition had deteriorated in the last 6-7 days and further deteriorated today. He passed away at 9.10 PM despite all efforts by our doctors. He was in SCB for one year and two months after arrival from AIIMS Delhi,” informed Dr Maharana. Kalia condition was critical and was on ventilator support following respiratory distress. Hands and legs were swollen. 14 member team of doctors which included specialists from the departments of Neuro Surgery, Paediatrics, Anaesthesiology, ENT, etc were treating him, Dr Das had said. 

The separated twins were admitted to SCB Medical College & Hospital on September 7, 2019 after their discharge from AIIMS. Right from their arrival, Jaga was doing well but Kalia not responding to the treatment. In his condolence message, the Chief Minister has tweeted, “The demise of Kalia is extremely saddening despite concerted efforts of the team of doctors and the best medical treatment offered to him. May God bestow the bereft family members with patience to bear the tragedy. I pray God for the salvation of Kalia’s soul that departed prematurely and also wish for the well-being and best health of Jaga.”

The conjoined twins born to Bhuan Kanhar and Puspanjali Kanhar of Milipada in Kandhamal district were suffering from a rare craniopagus disorder underwent rare craniopagus surgery by a team led by eminent neurosurgeon Prof. Ashok Kumar Mahapatra at AIIMS in New Delhi. A team comprising of 125 doctors and paramedical staff helped in separating 28-month-old Jaga and Kalia, conjoined twins from Odisha who were joined to each other at the cranium. The State government had sanctioned Rs 1 crore from Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for their surgery and treatment and were admitted to Delhi AIIMS on July 13, 2017. The State government fund will be utilized to borne the entire cost of the surgery to separate them as well as their stay in the hospital in Delhi. The rare surgery has entered the 2020 edition of the Limca Book of Records.
