Riesling "is usually thought of as sweet, but it's actually the most versatile of the white grapes," says Cohen. Aromas like "Riesling is an interesting grape for new wine drinkers as it has many styles of wine." Because Riesling is often sour, it pairs well with a wide variety of dishes. 

Chardonnay is the most common white grape variety on restaurant menus and in wine shops, Cohen said. Chardonnay is often described as 'oaky and buttery', which is 'not a characteristic of the grape,' Cohen adds, 'and those aromas and flavors come from the way the wine is made.' points out.

There are numerous styles of Chardonnay, including barrel-aged and non-oak-aged, barrel-aged and stainless, warm-climate and cold-climate. The lightest of all the red varieties on this list, Pinot Noir is a great place to start if you typically drink white, rosé, or sparkling wine.
