Bhupen Hazarika has undoubtedly been one of the most celebrated singers of our nation. His music was a healer.
On Sunday, Tej Hazarika, the son of the late singer-composer Bhupen Hazarika, asserted that the government's decision to award Bharat Ratna to his father is a victory for humanity, diversity and India's secularity.
On Friday, the government had announced that former president Pranab Mukherjee, the later Bharatiya Jana Sangh leader Nanaji Deshmukh and Bhupen Hazarika would be conferred the Bharat Ratna which is India's highest civilian award.
In an email sent to Tej Hazarika, it was stated that, "In his songs, blueprints for the youth and future of India can be discovered."
Tej responded to the award as, "In his songs he celebrated the richness of indigenous people not only of the Northeast but all of India and he advocated their inclusion in the Indian experience as essential to the success of Indian civilisation as a whole."
