Rome: President Joe Biden of the United States met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Rome to try to restore trust between the two countries, which had been eroded by a nuclear-powered submarine deal. On the eve of the 16th G20 Leaders' Summit, the two leaders met at the French Embassy in the Vatican on Friday, marking the first in-person discussion between them since a diplomatic storm erupted in September when the US and the UK said they would support the Australian Navy in acquiring nuclear-powered submarines under a newly formed trilateral security pact known as AUKUS.

France recalled its ambassadors to the United States and Australia in protest of the hasty decision made without consultation. "To use an English phrase, I believe what happened was clumsy on our part. It wasn't done gracefully, to be sure "Biden admitted while claiming that he had been under the impression that Paris had been informed that the French deal would not go through a long time ago. While acknowledging the recent concrete steps taken to rebuild trust between France and the United States, Macron insisted that deeds, not words, were needed to regain France's trust.

Without confirming whether the mistrust has been overcome or the bilateral relationship between the US and France has been repaired, Macron said, "What really matters now is what we will do together in the coming weeks, months, and years. Trust is like love, declarations are nice, but proof is better." he said.
